SplitScreen StackOBot
A downloadable game for Windows
SplitScreen StackOBot turns Epic Games' single-player StackOBot sample into a two-player local co-op game. Plug in a second gamepad, sit on the same couch, and pilot two bots through the same world at the same time — split-screen, shared objectives, no network required.
What's different from the original sample
- Two-player split-screen. A second local player joins automatically when the level starts and spawns next to Player 1.
- Shared world, shared objectives. Coins, portals, the destructible roof, the pressure-triggered platform and the AI's player-detection all react to either player, not just to Player 1.
- One HUD per player. Each player gets their own objective panel inside their own viewport.
- Per-player bot colours. Each bot gets a random colour every run, with the two players always landing on well-separated hues. You can also pick colours by hand from the main menu or the pause menu — your choice survives respawns and restarts, and the two bots on the main-menu screen preview it live.
- Input device assignment. A panel in the pause menu lists every connected device (keyboard & mouse plus each gamepad) and lets you hand it to Player 1 or Player 2 with a click. The mapping is saved to disk and restored next time you play.
- A new gold coin. The pickup is a new mesh, modelled procedurally in Blender, with a custom material that keeps the original's spin-and-bob animation.
Controls
Both players use the original StackOBot scheme: move, jump, and interact. Keyboard & mouse drives Player 1 by default and gamepads are handed out in connection order — open the pause menu to change who gets what.
Status
This is an alpha. The two-player loop is playable from start to finish, but there are known rough edges:
- The camera fade and ring effect on (re)spawn always plays on Player 1's viewport, even when Player 2 is the one respawning.
- The objective widget logs a harmless out-of-range warning while it builds its rows (this is present in the original sample too).
- Two-gamepad routing has had limited testing on real hardware. If a controller ends up on the wrong player, reassign it from the pause menu.
Feedback and bug reports are very welcome in the comments.

Built on StackOBot, the free sample project by Epic Games, upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.8. All original art, animation, level design and sound design are Epic's, redistributed here as part of a modified project under the Unreal Engine EULA. Additional music is royalty-free library music. The multiplayer systems, the colour and input-assignment UI, and the gold coin asset are new.
The game's Blueprint and C++ systems were built with AI-assisted development (Claude Code). The build contains no generative-AI art or audio.
